Mark Malabver is the new president-elect for the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA).
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former People’s National Party St Thomas Western caretaker, Mark Malabver is the new president-elect for the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA).
Malabver, who is the principal of Yallahs High School, won the recently concluded elections for the position with 3,123 votes.
The announcement was made in a press release from the association late Tuesday night.
Seven candidates contested the 2024 JTA president-elect election.
The winner will be officially proclaimed at the 60th Annual Conference scheduled for August 19 – 21, 2024 at the Ocean Coral Spring in Duncans, Trelawny.
Expressing his delight with the results, Malabver said “I am overwhelmed, I am humbled by the confidence that the membership of the JTA has bestowed on me and I have every intention of leading the institution, the JTA, the teachers to the best of my ability.”
Malabver was set to enter representational politics in 2021. In an exclusive interview with the Jamaica Observer in 2019, Malabver disclosed that he was expected to represent the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) in the next parliamentary election.
He was to contest the St Thomas Western seat, now represented by Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament James Robertson but was replaced by Marsha Francis.
