KINGSTON, Jamaica — Herbert Morrison Technical’s Deandre Daley threw down the gauntlet with a scintillating display of sprinting to clock a season’s best 10.16 seconds (0.8m/s), the fastest by a Jamaican junior this year, to win his first round heat in the boys’ Under-19 100m on the opening day of the National Junior Championship.
After a false start, Daley got off to a fast start and was well ahead of the field by the midway mark of the race and cruised through the finish line.
Gary Card was also impressive, running 10.38 seconds (0.5m/s) to win his heat and advance to the semi-finals on Friday.
Nyrone Wade — 10.41 (0.3m/s), Hector Benjamin — 10.46 seconds (1.5m/s) and Tramaine Todd — 10.54 (0.3m/s) also made progress but Javorne Dunkley who had run 10.17 seconds earlier in the season failed to finish his race, falling to the track after about 70 meters screaming in pain as he held his left hamstring.
Sabrina Dockery ran a personal best 11.21 seconds (1.6m/s), tied fifth best in the world, breaking her previous best of 11.26 seconds set earlier this year, to lead the Girls’ Under-19 100m into the semis.
Theianna-Lee Terrelonge also advanced after easily clocking 11.27 seconds (1.2m/s), Shanoya Douglas equalled her personal best 11.40 seconds (0.5m/s) and Briana Campbell ran 11.43 seconds (1.0m/s).
