KINGSTON, Jamaica — Some residents of Port Royal are refusing to evacuate their homes ahead of Hurricane Beryl, which has already begun impacting the island.

Weather conditions are expected to intensify in a matter of hours.

Speaking with Mayor of Kingston and St Andrew, Andrew Swaby, one individual described Port Royal residents as “pirates” who have survived storms from as far back as Hurricane Gilbert.

She told Swaby and his team that she would not be leaving the comfort of her home to go to the National Stadium or any other shelter.

Mayor Swaby was touring the community in final efforts to get Jamaicans in disaster prone areas to safety.
