ST JAMES, Jamaica — The committal hearing for Shamoya Green, the St James woman charged with the death of her five-month-old daughter who she reportedly threw off the roof of a three-storey building, has been rescheduled to September 30.
The committal hearing is to facilitate the transfer of the case to the St James Circuit Court.
The new date was given by Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton when the case was called up in the St James Parish Court on Thursday.
During the session, it was revealed that the case was not ready for transfer as an assessor’s report for a child witness who was reportedly present at the time of the incident and is slated to give evidence, was not ready. The report will assist in determining whether the child is prepared to testify in the case.
When the case was last called up in court on September 4, an updated medical report dated July 22, 2024 regarding Green’s mental and physical health had shown that she was unfit to plead. The report added that Green is suffering from a seizure disorder with psychosis as a result of her seizures.
As a result, Green, who is in custody at the South Camp Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston, is expected to attend court virtually via the Zoom platform.
The seizures and mental health challenges of Green became evident during her first court appearance on March 6, 2024.
At that time, she claimed that she was hearing the voices of her children calling. She also collapsed in the prisoner’s dock and was later revived. As a result, the court ordered that a psychiatric report be undertaken.
Reports are that on December 6, 2023, about 5:35 pm, Green was at home with her common-law husband and other family members when she reportedly asked to have a conversation with the man about their relationship. However, the partner refused to engage in a conversation at that point and differed talks for later that evening.
Green reportedly became enraged and left the room, taking the baby with her to the roof of the building and threw the baby on the concrete pit below in the yard.
Green was charged with murder on Saturday, February 24.
