Dissolution Sinkhole (or Solution Sinkhole) located in Jamaica (Caribbean).
A sinkhole, also known as a Sea Ball Hole, cenote, sink, swallet, swallow hole, or doline is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer.
There are 3 major types of sinkholes:
1. Cover-Subsidence Sinkholes
2. Cover-collapse Sinkholes
3. Dissolution Sinkholes
How do sinkholes form?
The one you will see is the Dissolution Sinkhole caused by karst process – which is the chemical dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. Dissolved carbonate rock is carried away from the surface and small depression gradually forms.
Rainfall and Surface water will percolate through joints of the rocks.
Sinkholes can vary from a few feet to hundreds of acres and from less than 1 to more than 100 feet deep. Some are shaped like shallow bowls or saucers whereas others have vertical walls; some hold water and form natural ponds.
Typically, sinkholes form slowly that little change is noticeable, but they can form suddenly when a collapse occurs. Such a collapse can have a dramatic effect if it occurs in an urban setting.
Sinkholes that capture drainage can hold it in large limestone caves and the caves may drain into tributaries of larger river as well as into the sea.
If the sinkhole is blocked, this may lead to ponding water, wetlands as well as flooding.
