Merlene Joyce Ottey OJ, CD (born 10 May 1960) to Hubert and Joan Ottey in Cold Spring, Hanover, Jamaica is a Jamaican-Slovenian former track and field sprinter. She was introduced to the sport by her mother, who bought her a manual on track and field.
In her early school years in the 1970s, Ottey attended Gurneys Mount and Pondside Schools before graduating from Rusea's and Vere Technical high schools. There she frequently competed barefoot in local races.
She began her career representing Jamaica in 1978, before representing Slovenia from 2002 to 2012. Ottey competed in six editions of the Olympic Games for Jamaica (1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000) and one edition for Slovenia (2004). Merlene Ottey has had a long career as a top level international sprinter, concluding with her anchoring the Slovene 4 × 100 m relay team at the 2012 European Championships at the age of 52.
Her career achievements and longevity led to her being called the "Queen of the Track". Her proclivity for earning bronze medals in major championships earned her the title of "Bronze Queen" in track circles.
Merlene Ottey along with Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt and Allyson Felix, is one of four athletes to win twenty or more medals at the Olympic Games and the World Championships (combined).
The Merlene Ottey High School initial mandate was to provide vocational skills training for students. The school was upgraded to a Comprehensive High School in 1998. Although the school offers a diverse range of programmes its greatest success has been in the skills and vocational areas.
Most of the students attained certification in a variety of vocational areas from HEART/NTA; The students participate in a host of national and regional competitions, for instance in the Jamaica Cultural Development Competition (JCDC) Festival.
Majority of the student population reside outside of the community. Some come from Montego Bay and others even farther away as well as most students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
