The school then, Bridgeport Secondary School opened its doors on the 27th of September 1978, to a total of 228 students (107 boys and 121 girls) and 28 members of staff.

The school was built by West Indies Home Contractors Ltd to accommodate 500 students.
A Bini-shell sits in the midst of the school. The Bini-shell is a thick layer of concrete. Special machinery blew the mortar up until it got its required shape of the dome.

Bridgeport High is located in a middle to lower-middle class community, but students are from many different communities in Kingston, St. Andrew and St Catherine.

The school caters to the total development of the students providing the best quality education, both in the day school and in the evening institute.

It offers the widest array of Technical and Vocational Education studies along with the sciences and general academic subjects.

The school operates on shifts: morning and afternoon system; and the extended day introduced in 1998 to ensure sufficient curriculum coverage.

Shifts are rotated on a semester basis (September to January, and January to July). The difference in shift is the red and blue color of belts and crests

Bridgeport High School currently enrollments over 2,000 students, 100 teachers and supporting staff of 50. It was upgraded to a comprehensive high school in 1991 and later to full high school status in 2000.

The Dome is where the school's first magazine entitled “The Dome” got its name.

Bridgeport High School has received national first place awards in electrical, clothing and textile, food and nutrition, home economics management and visual arts in CXC examinations.

They have also been crowned Manning Cup, Walker Cup and Oliver Shield Champions as well as Captain's Bakery Girls Football champions.
