BYD Jamaica is set to launch the BYD Shark, the brand’s first-ever Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) pickup.
“As BYD’s first-ever pickup, the Shark features rugged styling with a premium edge, a premium interior rivalling that of SUVs, an electrified powertrain designed for performance, and advanced safety features all at a compelling price point,” said Sloane Jackson, head of business, BYD Jamaica.
As a PHEV, the Shark will feature BYD’s advanced dual mode off-road hybrid system, which combines a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors. This setup delivers 435hp of combined power and 650Nm of torque, allowing the Shark to accelerate from 0-100 kilometres per hour in 5.7 seconds; this makes it the quickest pickup in its segment. It has a claimed a pure electric range of 100 kilometres and a combined range of 800 kilometres. As is standard, the ATL Automotive Group includes home charging station installation.
Inside, the Shark’s cabin offers an experience comparable to premium SUVs. The interior has soft-touch materials in a thoughtful layout, with a rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen featuring crisp graphics and a friendly user interface. Rounding out the premium feel is a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.
The Shark’s upcoming introduction into the Jamaican automotive landscape also represents the continued interest in the world’s #1 new energy vehicle brand since its June 2024 debut, and the larger push towards electric mobility locally and globally.
