Jamaica exported a combined $2.6 billion worth of bun and cheese in the 11-month period January to November 2024.
This is according to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN).
According to the Institute, Jamaica earned US$6,297,874, or J$986 million from cheese sales on the export market, and US$10,493,862 or J$1.6 billion from the sale of buns, bread, bullas etc., during the period.
STATIN emphasised that the figures are preliminary.
Posting on its website, STATIN said “export statistics for bun and cheese show the demand for one of Jamaica’s favourite Easter snacks internationally”.
It did not indicate the importing countries but Jamaicans in the diaspora are known to consume significant quantities of bun and cheese.
Each year, especially around the Easter holidays, Jamaicans purchase bun and cheese for shipment overseas to friends and relatives, particulalry in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
